List of TG Friendly Venues in Kansas City
1. Bars and Clubs
Kansas City has a nice variety of bars and clubs that cater to the LGBT+ community.
It’s also worth mentioning that KC has a growing drag scene. So a lot of venues I’ll talk about are both trans/crossdresser friendly.
The following are some places I’d recommend based on my experience.
Missie B’s – You’ll find some of the most open-minded people here. Featuring both drag queens & kings. Aside from same-sex couples, there’s always a high attendance of both male and female trans individuals in the crowd. Just keep in mind that they accept cash only.
Sidekick’s Saloon – This place is like a community center for the LGBT+ community due to how hospitable the bartenders are. Needless to say, meeting TGs isn’t uncommon here.
Woody’s Bar – Another LGBTQ+ hangout spot that puts heavy emphasis on entertainment. The environment here is very social, making it a great place to make new trans friends. The only issue is that on some nights, the bar feels a bit cliquey.
Bistro 303 – If you’re looking for a quieter place, then you’ll love 303. Most people here just want to sit and chat. The clientele tips more toward older men but you’ll find at least a few trans people here on most nights.
Sidestreet Bar – More of a sports bar as people usually come here to watch TV, play darts, and chill in general. You’ll meet many crossdressers here alongside trans individuals.
Hamburger Mary’s – A popular drag themed restaurant chain that always has an inclusive crowd. They usually have adult-themed drag shows that start after 10:30.
As you can see in the video, they also hire transgender staff members, so that makes trans folks feel even more welcomed here.
2. Community Centers & Organizations
Kansas City doesn’t have too many support groups, and you’ll find most people recommending Center of Inclusion – but that’s all you’ll really need.
It’s a community center that hosts trans-focused support groups every 3rd Thursday of the month. They welcome anyone under the trans umbrella, questioning, and ally.
They even have a Facebook group by the name of Equal Trans Support. It’s well-moderated and has 1,000+ members, making it a great resource to interact with TGs across the city.
Another organization worth mentioning is The Transgender Institute. They often host group meetings for the trans community that they post about on their Facebook page.
3. Private LGBT Events
There are also groups that host private LGBT+ events. You can find info about them usually through social media groups and pages.
For example, there’s the Palace Parties page on Instagram, which hosts LGBTQ-focused events at different places.
Similarly, there’s also the Cauldron Collective. It’s a trans owned vegan restaurant that is temporarily closed.
But their Instagram page occasionally posts about inclusive events where you’re almost guaranteed to meet T’s.
4. Trans Dating Sites
There are plenty of trans men and women looking for partners online in Kansas City.
Most of them use regular dating apps like Tinder and OkCupid. Some clearly state that they’re trans in their bio, while others don’t to avoid chasers.
Either way, you’ll also encounter transphobic jerks like this guy on those apps, so don’t waste your energy on them.
And if you’re looking for a more casual relationship then another option is TSDates. It’s a trans dating site that focuses more on nightstands.
5. Other Trans Friendly Spaces
Kansas City has some great LGBT+ owned businesses where you look for trans people.
One of my favorites is Cafe Cà Phê, an inclusive coffee shop that is always busy.
People usually visit this spot to socialize with strangers and on most days you’ll also find trans individuals here. But make sure to arrive early otherwise, you’ll hardly find a seat!
Another place is the Stray Cat Film Center. They have a great selection of movies and cheap concessions.
You’ll especially find a lot of queer folks here and some trans individuals in the mix.
Then there’s also Gaels Public House which has a mix of cisgendered and LGBT+ crowds. But everyone is pretty cool and ready to chat.
What It’s Like to Be Transgender in Kansas City
Kansas City boasts strict laws protecting trans rights and is actively working towards becoming an LGBTQ+ sanctuary city.
It has a lot of inclusive spaces and you’ll meet some really liberal and wholesome folks near the metro area.
But as you go deeper into the suburbs, the vibe does change. You’ll often meet individuals who look like they’re “weirded out” the moment they see a trans person.
Nonetheless, you’re still unlikely to face any physical threats. And with the city making strides toward inclusivity, hopefully, it will become an even better place for trans people in the coming years.
