If you’re trying to meet trans folks in San Jose and feeling a bit lost, you’re not alone.
This city isn’t overflowing with obvious LGBTQ+ hangouts, making it a bit difficult to find trans people.
But the good news is, I’ve explored the city and found a few reliable ways to connect with the community.
And don’t worry, we’re not just going to skim through the typical nightspots.
I’ll also introduce you to the buzzing community center and trans-friendly online dating sites. So let’s dive straight into it!

List of TG Friendly Venues in San Jose
1. Bars and Clubs
San Jose has a ton of nightlife options but they aren’t particularly known to be LGBTQ-focused.
Meeting trans people here can be a bit hit-or-miss, but I’ve created a list of bars and clubs where your chances might be a bit higher.
Renegades – Located at 501 W Taylor St, primarily a gay bar so should come here during their WooWoo’s Cir-Qus every 4th Saturday.
They invite some of the best drag performers in Silicon Valley during this event and the place is packed with many trans folks in the crowd.
The Caravan Lounge – Located at 98 Almaden Ave, this bar has been around for a long time.
It’s not specifically an LGBT+ spot but trans people often come here for its comedy nights to enjoy a judgment-free atmosphere.
Mac’s Club – Located at 39 Post St, small gay bar but it’s very inclusive and I could be myself here without any worries.
Met some very friendly LGBTQ+ folks to chat with. But parking is almost non-existent so it’s better to come in a cab.
Splash Bar – Located at 65 Post St, I got there early, around 9:30 PM on a Friday, and the place was pretty empty. But after about an hour, it started picking up.
80% of the patrons were male while the remaining 20% were women, trans and queer folks.
They have two dancefloors and talented drag queens are tearing the house down on most nights, here’s a glimpse of it in the video.
2. Community Centers and Organizations
You can always meet trans people by visiting the Billy Defrank LGBTQ Community Center at The Alameda District.
It has a trans women support group every 2nd and 4th Friday and one for transmen and non-binary folks on the 4th Tuesday of the month.
The Silicon Valley Pride organization is also quite active. Aside from the yearly San Jose Pride Festival, they also host drag events every other month.
3. Online Groups and Pages
If you want to connect with the LGBTQ+ community online then check out Nice Queer Pals (NQP).
It’s a Facebook group that welcomes everyone but particularly focuses on non-binary people and queer women. However, it has many trans members as well.
There’s also a speed dating group for lesbian, bisexual, and trans folks on Meetup. You can either join their in-person events or virtual meetups through Zoom.
Either way, the group has over 1,000 members and it’s very active, so it’s a great way to meet trans men and women.
4. Trans Dating Sites
San Jose doesn’t have many hangout spots for TGs so it makes sense that most people turn to online dating sites.
Given the size of the Bay Area, you’ll find a good number of trans folks on OkCupid.
It’s a great platform whether you’re looking to make friends with trans people or find someone for dating.
To make things easier, it also has filters to help you sort out trans profiles.
Just a heads-up, though – most people on OkCupid are usually looking for something serious.
If you’re more into hookups, then an app like Grindr might be a better fit for you.
It’s popular among those seeking a more laid-back, no-strings-attached kind of arrangement.
What It’s Like to Be Transgender in San Jose
Living in San Jose as a trans person? It’s decent, but I won’t lie, it can get a tad boring sometimes.
If you’re looking for wild LGBTQ+ nightlife, you might find the options a bit thin on the ground here.
But don’t sweat it – San Francisco, is just an hour away and it has all the trans-friendly places that you could possibly need.
The good thing is that there’s a sense of community here and it’s a city where you can feel safe.
The majority of the people I came across were super respectful, especially the younger techy folks from Silicon Valley. And you can find gender-neutral bathrooms in most places.
So yeah, even if the nightlife is mediocre, many other positive aspects about San Jose make it a great city for TGs.
