The trans community in Norfolk might be small, but it’s lively. There are pockets of trans friendly spaces scattered across the city.
In fact, I’d say that it’s miles ahead in comparison to the other cities of Hampton Roads like Chesapeake.

List of TG Friendly Venues in Norfolk
1. Bars and Clubs
Colley Avenue in Ghent is widely regarded as the most trans friendly area in Norfolk.
You can find trans people strolling the streets there on most nights as it has some popular nightlife spots.
Nonetheless, this list isn’t limited to a single area. You’ll find TGs on most nights at the following bars and clubs.
The Wave – Located at 4107 Colley Ave, this club is considered to be an LGBT+ hotspot and you can find trans people here on most nights.
But they’ve been getting a ton of negative reviews regarding their management. I hope they address the issues while they’re still relevant.
MJ’s Tavern – Located at 4019 Granby St, by far the most popular queer bar in Norfolk.
You will almost always find a group of trans people here regardless of the time you visit. If you want cheap drinks then visit on Tuesdays for their $2 Vodka.
37th & Zen – Located at 1083 37th St, this is a great bar if you’re looking for a more chill atmosphere.
They do lots of drag shows and goth nights along with other music stuff.
Gershiwn’s – Located at 332 Granby St, this isn’t particularly an LGBT bar, but they do occasional drag shows that are great for meeting trans people.
Besides, they’re very inclusive so you’ll always feel welcomed regardless of your gender identity.
2. Community Centers and Organizations
Want to meet trans friends without hitting the clubs? Try the LGBT Life Center. TGs from all around Hampton Roads come here for support and to hang out.
They organize social groups, fun events, and can help you find trans-friendly healthcare.
If you’re into sports then I also recommend visiting the events hosted by Stonewall Sports Norfolk.
Even if you aren’t participating, visit one of their leagues as a spectator and I’m sure you’ll meet many trans individuals.
Also, the largest Pride Festival of Hampton Roads is hosted in Norfolk. You can see in the video how much fun it can really be…
Aside from that, the organization also hosts events throughout the year so keep an eye on their calendar.
3. Trans Dating Sites
Meeting trans friends in Norfolk isn’t that hard, but some nearby cities like Chesapeake and Virginia Beach might not have as many options.
That’s where online dating comes in handy. The go-to app for many is OkCupid—it’s not just for dating, but also for making friends.
Keep in mind, though, that most folks are leaning towards dating or friendship rather than casual stuff.
If you’re more into casual encounters, try TSDates. It’s a site that focuses on T4M hookups, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.
So, whether you’re after friendships, dates, or casual encounters, there’s an online space for everyone.
4. Online Groups and Pages
Norfolk doesn’t seem to offer much in terms of online groups. I only found two TG focused communities on Facebook.
One of them is this Trans Masculine Support Group that hosts meetings on the 1st Wednesday of every month for trans masculine, non binary and other GNC folks.
The other is Men In Transition, which serves a similar purpose. And while this one doesn’t have many members, it’s still pretty active.
Other than that, you can find trans friendly groups and events on Meetup, so make sure to join those!
5. Other LGBT+ Spaces
We’re not done yet because there are many more inclusive spaces in Norfolk.
However, Eleanor’s Book Store is a favorite among trans people.
It’s a feminist bookshop so obviously, the people here are very friendly towards trans and queer folks as well.
And if you’re looking for a hip and trans friendly gym in Norfolk then Onelife Fitness is a solid choice.
The staff is very welcoming and you can find some queer folks working out here.
What It’s Like to Be Transgender in Norfolk
Norfolk has a big trans community, especially in Ghent/Park Place.
The city is open to everyone—no matter your age, color, background, or who you love.
I know lots of trans friends here, and they’re happy. The LGBT Life Center is great, and you’ll find plenty of queer folks around.
Norfolk is right on Richmond’s heels when it comes to being inclusive, and it’s catching up fast!
In a nutshell, if you’re looking for trans friends in Hampton Roads, Norfolk is the place. It’s growing, and people here are friendly.
